Fashion vs. Art – Il Teatro alla Moda

Wall design in Castello Sforzesco
Missoni 1990
Artifact:
The wall design that is shown above was found in the Castello Sforzesco. I found it on the walls underneath one of the arches of the castle. This area lead you right into the gift shop area of the castle where you were able to by your tickets, books, and souvenirs. Castello Sforzesco was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza. Prior to the 20th century it was used as a symbol of power. However, after the 20th century it has become a home to fine art collections and events for tourists as well as the natives of Milan.
Fashion:
The gown that is shown above was made in 1990 by Missoni. It was created for the opening ceremonies for the Italia world cup. The gown is made out of a jersey fabric with geometric patterns in yellow, red, blue, and white on a black background.
Fashion vs. Art:
The linear stripes design on the Missoni gown is parallel to the linear pattern that was found on the walls underneath one of the arch ways within the castle. The use of the vertical lines works to give the optical illusion of length and can be used to denote power as well.
