Artifact: Cathedral S. Maria Nascente. Milan, Italy. Duomo di Milano was created in 1386. The cathedral was built on the wishes of Gian Galeazoo Visconti. It stands 108 metres tall at its tallest peak. The cathedral houses 3,400 statues and 5 naves, making it one of largest churches in Europe.
Fashion: Viktor Smedinge designed this garment as a student studying at Central Saint Martins School in London. The collection that this garment belongs to is Fall/Winter 2011. Viktor’s inspiration came from trying to generate volume in a light way. The fabric he chose was lapped horse hair which was able to naturally hold of the rolls without having to be reinforced. His whole collection was only shown in the natural beige and black. He decided to add the black along with the beige to create a contrast with the beige and to highlight the shapes.
Art vs Fashion:
The shapes that were created at the top of Duomo’s arches on the very top of the structure mimic those that are seen in Viktor’s design. The triangle then turned oval shape is almost identical.
